Fresh Produce
Summer 2008
August and September are peak times for harvesting summer’s bountiful produce here in Northeast Ohio. Corn, tomatoes, peaches, beans, peppers, raspberries, summer squash, melons, eggplant, lettuces . . . In addition to CSA’s (community supported agriculture programs), which I wrote about in the last issue, farm stands, pick-your-own farms, and farmers markets offer all these locally grown culinary riches. Here’s a short list of some that I like:
--The Canton Farmers Market, 4th St. NW & Cleveland Ave. , www.cantonfarmersmarket.com
--Juicy Fruits Market, on Pittsburgh Ave. just south of Applegrove in North Canton
--Holleydale Farm Produce, Dressler & Fulton in Canton, 330-492-4292
--Four Seasons farm stand, 707 Grove St. NE in North Canton
--Maize Valley Market and Winery, 6193 Edison St. in Hartville, www.maizevalley.com
--The Countryside Farmers Market at Heritage Farms, Rt. 303 7 Riverview Road in Peninsula, www.cvcountryside.org
--Szalay’s farm stand, 4563 Riverview Rd. in Peninsula, 330-657-2727
--Dunlap’s Orchard, Opens in September for apple picking, 5550 South Arlington Rd. in Clinton, 330-896-8650.
This is just a fraction of what’s available around Northeast Ohio. Keep your eyes open for places to check out—you may find a great source just by reading a handwritten sign on a street corner. There are a few good web sites that are helpful in locating farm stands and markets: www.ourohio.org (click on Food/Families), www.localharvest.org, and apps.ams.usda.gov/FarmersMarkets. Happy shopping!
